Une semaine d’hommages à Fidel Castro s’ouvre à Cuba

Cuba s’apprête à célébrer, en grande pompe, le quatre-vingtième anniversaire de son dirigeant, alors que le mystère plane toujours sur son état de santé.

Le coup d’envoi de ces cérémonies d’hommage sera donné, mardi 28 novembre, lors d’une soirée de gala à La Havane.

Nul ne savait, lundi, si Fidel, hospitalisé le 27 juillet dernier, serait en mesure d’apparaître en public. Après quatre mois de lente convalescence, des rumeurs autour de ses possibles adieux circulaient. Son cadet, Raul, s’est lui vu remettre “provisoirement” le pouvoir, à l’occasion de l’opération chirurgicale qu’a subie le leader cubain – une première depuis 1959. Au terme de quatre mois d’intérim, au cours desquels il est prudemment resté en retrait, il pourrait voir s’ouvrir les portes de la succession.

Mardi soir, quelque mille cinq cents personnalités de soixante-seize pays doivent ouvrir le bal des cérémonies lors d’une réception de gala au théâtre Karl-Marx, à La Havane. Sont attendus les présidents de Bolivie, Evo Morales, du Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, d’Haïti, René Préval, mais aussi l’ancien président du gouvernement espagnol Felipe Gonzalez, la Française Danielle Mitterrand et l’acteur Gérard Depardieu.

Mercredi 29 novembre s’ouvrira un colloque de trois jours sur le thème “Mémoire et avenir : Cuba et Fidel”. Jeudi sont prévus un premier défilé militaire à Santiago, dans le Sud, et un grand concert à La Havane. Le point d’orgue de la semaine doit être l’imposant défilé militaire, samedi 2 décembre, le premier organisé dans la capitale depuis dix ans. Près de trois cent mille participants sont attendus.

Une apparition du chef de l’Etat et de son frère pourrait déterminer l’avenir du régime. “Si Fidel n’apparaît pas de toute la semaine, ou s’il ne se montre qu’à la télévision depuis sa chambre, comme pour le sommet [des non-alignés], alors cela voudra dire que son état ne s’est pas amélioré, avec tout ce que cela implique”, a estimé un diplomate latino-américain.”Dès lors, Raul devra s’impliquer beaucoup plus, parce que le pays ne peut vivre éternellement comme ça”, a-t-il ajouté.

Lors de sa dernière apparition télévisée, le 28 octobre, Fidel Castro avait laissé l’impression d’un homme encore fragile, mais lucide. L’endroit où il séjourne durant sa convalescence, tout comme son état, demeurent des “secrets d’Etat”.

Nog eens wordt duidelijk gepresenteerd dat de staat een rechtspersoon is met haar eigen belangen en doelstellingen. Niet noodzakelijk dus dezelfde belangen als die van het volk of het individu.

Een vrij individu kan de staat zekerheidshalve beter als zijn vijand gaan beschouwen.

Financieel adviseurs dienden zich al zich in het buitenland te vestigen om onafhankelijk advies te kunnen vestrekken en niet te hoeven voldoen aan de geldende meldingsplicht. -Op Free Antilles later meer hierover en ook de coördinaten naar deze dienstverleners- Nu is het dus voor onafhankelijke kranten, nieuwssites en onderzoeksjournalisten beter de grens over te trekken.

The U.S. Ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, launched a scathing attack on the United Nations Friday.

Bolton was furious over the adoption by the General Assembly of a resolution which said the assembly regretted the deaths of 19 civilians in an attack by the Israeli military in the town of Beit Hanoun last week. Despite the resolution being significantly watered down at the behest of the United States, and being passing by 156 votes to seven, Bolton launched a blistering attack on the UN, and many of its members.

“Many of the sponsors of that resolution are notorious abusers of human rights themselves, and were seeking to deflect criticism of their own policies,” he said. “This type of resolution serves only to exacerbate tensions by serving the interests of elements hostile to Israel’s inalienable and recognized right to exist.”

“This deepens suspicions about the United Nations that will lead many to conclude that the organization is incapable of playing a helpful role in the region,” Bolton continued.

“In a larger sense, the United Nations must confront a more significant question, that of its relevance and utility in confronting the challenges of the 21st century. We believe that the United Nations is ill served when its members seek to transform the organization into a forum that is a little more than a self-serving and a polemical attack against Israel or the United States,” he said.

2. Then you can spend your own money on somebody else. For example, I buy a birthday present for someone. Well, then I’m not so careful about the content of the present, but I’m very careful about the cost.
3. Then, I can spend somebody else’s money on myself. And if I spend somebody else’s money on myself, then I’m sure going to have a good lunch!
4. Finally, I can spend somebody else’s money on somebody else. And if I spend somebody else’s money on somebody else, I’m not concerned about how much it is, and I’m not concerned about what I get. And that’s government. And that’s close to 40% of our national income.”

MF “I want people to take thought about their condition and to recognize that the maintainence of a free society is a very difficult and complicated thing and it requires a self-denying ordinance of the most extreme kind. Bureaucratieën krimpen zichzelf per definitie niet in, dat is in de hele geschiedenis der mensheid nog nooit vertoond, en het zal ook nooit gebeuren. Zelfs onder de kabinetten Balkenende, die verondersteld worden drastisch te hebben bezuinigd, zijn de staatsuitgaven alleen maar verder gestegen. Met 8 procent in het begrotingsjaar 2006, om precies te zijn, tot 146,7 miljard, en in 2007 zullen ze nog eens met 6,9 procent omhoog gaan tot 156,8 miljard. Het is een onweerlegbaar feit: sinds het allerprilste begin van onze parlementaire democratie geeft elk kabinet meer belastinggeld uit dan zijn voorgangers. De hoop dat dit proces van binnenuit kan worden gestuit is een volstrekte illusie. Tehran, Sep. 3 – A man by the name of Mohammad N. was hanged in public in the city of Arak, (central Iran) on Sunday, August 29.

Mohammad’s four young children were brought to the scene to watch the execution of their father.

As he was being taken to the gallows, the children pleaded for mercy for their father, who was accused of killing his wife. Reacting to the outcries of his children, the crowd also called for the victim to be spared.

Officials, however, went ahead with the hanging. As the victim was being lifted on the crane, his 15-year-old girl, Mahdiyeh, ran up to her father’s feet. While in tears, she attempted to force him on her own shoulders so that he would be able to breathe. Officials, however, prevented her from doing so and forced the children watch their father die.

The fate of Mohammad’s two daughters and two sons remains undetermined.

In the past week alone, seven people have been executed or sentenced to death, including an afghan boy, 16. On August 15, the Iranian regime executed Atefeh Rajabi, also 16, in the city of Neka, northern Iran.

“I pleaded many times with Che on behalf of prisoners,” said Arzuaga. “I remember especially the case of Ariel Lima, a young boy. Che did not budge. Nor did Fidel, whom I visited. I became so traumatized that, at the end of May 1959, I was ordered to leave the parish of Casa Blanca, where La Cabaña was located and where I had held Mass for three years. I went to Mexico for treatment.”

How many people were killed at La Cabaña? Vilasuso told me that 400 people were executed between January and the end of June in 1959 (at which point Guevara ceased to be in charge). Secret cables sent by the American Embassy in Havana to the State Department in Washington spoke of “over 500.”

Which brings us to Carlos Santana and the chic Che gear he wore to perform at last year’s Academy Awards ceremony. In an open letter published in Miami’s El Nuevo Herald last year, the great jazz musician Paquito D’Rivera castigated Santana for his Oscars costume and added: “One of those Cubans [at La Cabaña] was my cousin Bebo, who was imprisoned there precisely for being a Christian. He recounts to me with infinite bitterness how he could hear from his cell in the early hours of dawn the executions, without trial or process of law, of the many who died shouting, ‘Long live Christ the King!’ ”

Che Guevara’s lust for power had other ways of expressing itself besides murder. His megalomania manifested itself in the predatory urge to take over people’s lives and property. This obsession with collectivist control led him to collaborate on the security apparatus that was set up to subjugate 6.5 million Cubans.

The first forced labor camp, Guanahacabibes, was set up in western Cuba at the end of 1960. Said Guevara: We “only send to Guanahacabibes those doubtful cases where we are not sure people should go to jail … people who have committed crimes against revolutionary morals, to a lesser or greater degree.”

This camp was the precursor to the systematic confinement of dissidents, homosexuals, AIDS patients, Catholics, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Afro-Cuban priests. Herded into buses and trucks, the “unfit” were transported at gunpoint into concentration camps organized on the Guanahacabibes mold. Some would never return; others would be raped, beaten or mutilated; most would be traumatized for life.

The great revolutionary also had a chance to put into practice his economic vision as head of the National Bank of Cuba and of the Department of Industry of the National Institute of Agrarian Reform at the end of 1959 and, starting in early 1961, as minister of industry.

This period saw the near-collapse of Cuba’s sugar production, the failure of industrialization and the introduction of rationing — all this in what had been one of Latin America’s four most economically successful countries since before the Batista dictatorship. By 1963, all hopes of industrializing Cuba were abandoned, and the revolution accepted its role as a colonial provider of sugar to the Soviet bloc in exchange for oil. Here’s a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) report on Cuba circa 1957 that dispels the fantasies of pre-Castro Cuba still cherished by America’s most prestigious academics and its most learned film critics: “One feature of the Cuban social structure is a large middle class,” it starts. “Cuban workers are more unionized (proportional to the population) than U.S. workers. The average wage for an 8 hour day in Cuba in 1957 is higher than for workers in Belgium, Denmark, France and Germany. Cuban labor receives 66.6 per cent of gross national income. In the U.S. the figure is 70 per cent, in Switzerland 64 per cent. 44 per cent of Cubans are covered by Social legislation, a higher percentage then in the U.S.”

In 1958 Cuba had a higher per-capita income than Austria and Japan. Cuban industrial workers had the 8th highest wages in the world. In the 1950’s Cuban stevedores earned more per hour than their counterparts in New Orleans and San Francisco. Cuba had established an 8 hour work-day in 1933 — five years before FDR’s New Dealers got around to it. Add to this: one months paid vacation. The much-lauded (by liberals) Social-Democracies of Western Europe didn’t manage this until 30 years later.

Cuba, a country 71% white in 1957, was completely desegregated 30 years before Rosa Parks was dragged off that Birmingham bus and handcuffed. In 1958 Cuba had more female college graduates per capita than the U.S.

The Anti-Batista rebellion (not revolution) was staffed and led overwhelmingly by college students and professionals. Here’s the makeup of the “peasant revolution’s” first cabinet, drawn from the leaders in the Anti-Batista fight: 7 lawyers, 2 University professors, 3 University students, 1 doctor, 1 engineer, 1 architect, 1 former city mayor and Colonel who defected from the Batista Army. A notoriously “bourgeois” bunch as Che himself might have put it.

By 1961, however, workers and campesinos (country folk) made up the overwhelming bulk of the anti-Castroite rebels, especially the guerrillas in the Escambray mountains. And boy, would THAT rebellion make for an action-packed and gut-wrenching movie. If by some miracle it ever got made you can bet these learned critics would pan it too. Alle Europese ondernemers kunnen voortaan een forse belastingbesparing realiseren door een vennootschap te vestigen in een lidstaat met een aanzienlijk lager belastingtarief dan in hun eigen land. De fiscus mag de winsten van een buitenlandse dochtermaatschappij niet belasten, ook niet als de constructie alleen opgezet is om belasting te ontwijken.

Een recente baanbrekende uitspraak van het Europese Hof van Justitie heeft betrekking op een geschil tussen voedingsmiddelenconcern Cadbury Schweppes en de Britse fiscus. Om te ontkomen aan het hoge belastingtarief in het Verenigd Koninkrijk heeft Cadbury Schweppes in de jaren negentig twee dochtermaatschappijen in Ierland opgericht. Via deze vennootschappen werden middelen aangekocht en ter beschikking gesteld aan de moedermaatschappij in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Deze constructie zorgde ervoor dat de winst in het Verenigd Koninkrijk werd verminderd en dat deze winst in Ierland werd belast tegen een veel lager tarief van 10 procent. In 2000 legde de Britse fiscus het bedrijf een extra heffing van 8,6 miljoen pond op over de winst van zijn Ierse dochters.

Om een einde te maken aan de heksenjacht op ondernemers die een fiscaal voordeel trachten te behalen, heeft het Europese Hof wederom het belang van het beginsel van vrijheid van vestiging onderstreept. De Cypriotische raadsheer verwees in de behandeling van deze rechtszaak onder andere naar het door het Haags Juristen College uitgelokte Inspire Art-arrest: Een ondernemer moet vrij zijn om te kiezen voor een rechtsvorm uit een andere lidstaat, ook al doet hij dit alleen om te profiteren van het voordelige vennootschapsrecht in deze lidstaat. Het Europese Hof oordeelde dat deze argumentatie ook van toepassing is in het geval dat de ondernemer voornamelijk probeert te profiteren van de fiscale wetgeving in een andere lidstaat.

De Europese rechter heeft bepaald dat de Britse wetgeving in strijd is met het Europese verdrag en dat een nationale overheid geen belemmeringen op mag leggen aan een Europese ondernemer die een vennootschap wil vestigen in een andere lidstaat. De fiscus kan alleen tot heffing over de winsten van buitenlandse dochtermaatschappijen overgaan indien aangetoond wordt dat er sprake is van kunstmatige constructies zonder economische activiteiten: een brievenbusmaatschappij of schijnvennootschap.

Zo opent het Cadbury Schweppes-arrest de deur voor elke Nederlandse ondernemer voor een vestiging in een “low tax” Europese jurisdictie, zoals Ierland of Cyprus. Cyprus is de lidstaat met de laagste belastingen van de EU: Het vennootschapsbelastingtarief is 10 procent. Anti-misbruikwetgeving van betekenis is er niet, zodat winsten veelal eenvoudig kunnen worden verlegd naar een zero tax haven. Zo ontstaat een effectief tarief van minder dan 1%, bijvoorbeeld bij royalties, de inkomsten uit intellectuele eigendomsrechten op patenten, merken, software en (franchise)formules. Ook import/ export firma’s kunnen hiervan profiteren. De Engelstalige financieel-economische infrastructuur versterkt de concurrentiepositie van Cyprus nog verder. Het land heeft zich bovendien ontwikkeld tot de beste locatie voor holding- en financieringsmaatschappijen in Europa.

Het Haags Juristen College, dat het bovenvermelde Inspire-Art proefproces heeft uitgelokt, heeft een naam opgebouwd op het gebied van belastingontwijking, vermogensbescherming, estate planning en internationaal vennootschapsrecht, en heeft al in 2001 haar hoofdkantoor op Cyprus gevestigd. Een team van 14 (meestal Nederlandstalige) medewerkers verzorgt vanuit het kantoor in Limassol de oprichting, het beheer en desgewenst het bestuur van velerlei vennootschappen en andere rechtsvormen. Daarvan zijn er inmiddels 6000 opgericht. De cliënten van het Haags Juristen College zijn kleine tot middelgrote ondernemers en consultants uit Nederland, België en Duitsland.

SMOC is de stichting die zogenaamd ijvert voor de belangen van de mensen die wonen onder de rook van Isla.

De hoeveelheid troep die deze -voor het eiland volkomen nutteloze- raffinaderij produceert is wereldwijd ongekend. De hele nacht hebben de grote sigaren weer huizenhoge vlammen uitgebraakt. Je hoeft maar naar Hato te rijden langs de enorme cat crackers en je ogen tranen. Mensen (meest straatarm) die onder de rook wonen, leven tien jaar korter.

Chavez wil de plant houden en dat is ook een socialist dus hebben de statenleden -met uiteraard onze januskop socialistisch lts er Cooper- ermee ingestemd dat

1. er verder gebouwd kan worden in de rook,
2. dat ze de vernietigende bevindingen uit het door henzelf geëntameerd rapport naast zich neerleggen en
3. dat er normen zijn, maar dat die mogen worden overschreden.

De kranten reageren uiteraard niet. Die zijn bang en dom. Maar de stichting SMOC!? Wie zijn dat? Zijn dat activisten?

Politiek correcte heren en dames van SMOC, deze ambtenaren en politici zijn moordenaars! Waarom reageert u niet? Of ambieerde u soms zelf een baantje bij de criminele overheid?

Wat zou een activist nu eens doen? Ik zou voorstellen een grote tankwagen met vloeibaar opgewarmd asfalt in de richting van de woning van onze lts er te sturen. Vervolgens de slang in de tuin geworpen en lozen maar…

Je wordt misschien even vastgezet, maar iedereen hier op het eiland staat achter je. Zo creëer je momentum!

Vervolgens wordt het mooi weer opgeruimd (ondertussen is de woning onbewoonbaar) en dan doe je het gewoon nog eens een keertje over!

Denkt u ook niet dat er dan ineens dingen gaan veranderen? –h

+ 31 is verlost van de bedenker en ontwerper van gebouwen met de kilte van de technocraat. Gebouwen van waar mensen met een hart zich zo ver mogelijk willen verwijderen.

Na zijn aanvankelijke bekering tot “het wide wonen” mag de professor zijn miskenning ventileren via het ingezonden brievenkanaal van ons plaatselijk kritiekloos suffertje Amigoe.

Antilliaans architect

TOT MIJN genoegen las ik dat de besprekingen tussen Curaçao en Nederland als voorbereiding op de slotverklaring worden gevoerd in Hotel Mercure te Den Haag. Er werd niet bij vermeld dat dit bekende blauwe hotel in 1983 door een Antilliaans architect werd ontworpen. Vermoedelijk is dit bij geen van de (Antilliaanse)deelnemers aan dit overleg bekend. Blijkbaar is het, anders dan bij bijvoorbeeld een componist, schrijver of schilder nog steeds niet normaal om ook bij de architect even stil te staan. Het gaat mij niet om nog meer naamsbekendheid, maar omblijk van cultureel bewustzijn bij politici. Iets wat in een trots autonoom land gewoon hoort. Als ik mij niet vergis, mis ik in dit belangrijke politieke proces tot nu toe een culturele paragraaf. Dat belooft niet veel goeds voor ons.
